Many bottled dressings
are high in salt and refined sugars, says Susan
Weiner, a registered dietitian in private
practice in New York. When you make your
own dressing, you have control over how
much (if any) you add. Sprinkle a little red
wine vinegar over your salad and toss. Next,
drizzle on a few tablespoons o f extra-virgin
olive oil mixed with a handful of chopped
fresh thym e and rosemary.

OATM EAL
When you can, opt for old-
fashioned steel-cut oatmeal cooked on the
burner. A serving o f these oats will give you
i6 percent o f your daily recommended fiber
intake com pared to about 12 percent for
instant oats. If mornings are tight on time,
make enough for a few days, divvy up portions
in m icrowave-safe containers, and
refrigerate.
THE NEXT BEST THING
Additive-free
Nature’s Path instant oatmeal has great
texture and flavor. Try the Organic Hot
Oatmeal Variety Pack,

PO PCO RN
Plain popcorn is a whole grain
and low in calories. But when it’s popped in a
microwave bag loaded with salt, trans fats,
and artificial flavorings, the benefits are much
reduced. Robin Webb, author of
You Can Eat
That!,
suggests sprinkling freshly grated
Parmesan cheese and dried minced onion
or Italian herbs on hom em ade popcorn.
